Redefining Waste: How SLS Minimizes Landfill and Maximizes IT Asset Recovery
Every year, millions of retired IT assets are improperly discarded, fueling growing environmental challenges and exposing organizations to unnecessary compliance risks. At Sims Lifecycle Services (SLS), we view this challenge as an opportunity to lead in sustainable IT asset management. Guided by our purpose to create a world without waste, we continually innovate to minimize landfill contributions, reduce carbon impact and maximize the reuse of client assets. By ensuring that no electronic devices or components are sent to landfill, with full transparency and traceable reporting, SLS helps clients meet their sustainability goals while turning responsible ITAD into a measurable competitive advantage.
A Practical Zero-Waste Approach
SLS maintains a practical zero-waste approach that ensures no client assets are ever sent directly to landfill. Every electronic device and component we process is reused or recycled, with the exception of certain fiber optic cables, which are processed for energy recovery. Our downstream vendors quantify and report all landfill and energy recovery fractions, providing clients with full transparency and traceable data to support their ESG reporting and sustainability audits.

Waste Reduction
At our Circular Centers worldwide, we’re implementing new methods to reduce packaging-related waste, including:
- Reusing wooden and plastic pallets on-site to minimize single-use materials.
- Developing alternative downstream services to develop resource recovery solutions instead of waste disposal.
- At our Eindhoven facility, we replaced single-use cardboard boxes with durable plastic containers, eliminating a major source of packaging waste while improving operational efficiency.
Preventing Waste at the Source
Sustainability at SLS starts long before equipment reaches our facilities. We actively collaborate with clients to prevent avoidable waste by improving packaging, logistics and data management practices that preserve asset value and enable reuse.
Our Client Success teams provide proactive guidance to:
- Ensure equipment is packaged correctly to reduce damage during transport, greatly enhancing remarketing value.
- Resolve device lockout issues that can prevent reuse or delay resale.
- Support reuse-first strategies that extend asset life and reduce emissions related with production of new equipment.
This strategic, hands-on approach not only improves recovery outcomes but also helps clients achieve their sustainability and circularity objectives more efficiently.
Sustainability as a Continuous Journey
At SLS, we believe that every retired asset presents an opportunity to reduce waste and contribute to a more circular economy. The result is measurable value: reduced landfill contributions, lower carbon emissions and higher asset recovery.
By partnering with SLS, organizations gain more than a compliant ITAD provider, they gain a strategic sustainability partner who delivers tangible environmental and operational value. Together, we’re redefining what responsible technology lifecycle management can achieve.
