Why are careful handling and standardized packing critical for IT asset transport?
Handling and Packing IT Assets
Careful handling and packing IT assets provides the following benefits:
- Higher resale value can be achieved when no transport damage occurs.
- Increases chance that little to no damage will occur during handling and transit.
- Aesthetics make a big impact on selling an asset.
- Avoids damaging an item that has remained cosmetically perfect for months or years, just by moving it the wrong way.
Store
Step 1: Preparing and Storing IT Assets Properly
Do:
- Store equipment for resale in a secure cabinet. Handle with care to avoid damage.
- Any data bearing devices should be securely stored. SLS will destroy data and issue Certificates of Data Destruction when equipment is received.
- Place items for recycling in a pallet box for easy collection.
- Unlock password protected or encrypted devices to enable data wiping and reuse.
Don’t:
- Put unnecessary stickers on devices. This will impact resale potential.
- Stack or pile equipment where it could be damaged.
- Mix items meant for resale with recycling.

Some electronics are hazardous and require additional care when packing and shipping.
Packing Checklist
Batteries are a potential fire hazard and should always be handled with care.
- Requirements for shipping intact batteries, whether housed in equipment or not, varies by jurisdiction. Please check with your program manager for regulatory and labeling requirements in your region.
- More stringent regulatory requirements are in place for packing, labeling and shipping a “batteries only” shipment. Do not send a “batteries only” shipment to SLS before consulting with your program manager.
- Damaged batteries are considered HazMat and are a fire hazard. Do not ship these batteries to SLS without special consultation with our EH&S teams.
Please do not ship these products to SLS:
We do not accept equipment that contain liquids, gasses, or radioactive material or items that may be too large for us to accommodate in the SLS facilities.
