Earth Day is a global reminder that preserving the planet requires action from all of us. At SLS, Earth Day isn’t a date on the calendar, it’s the way we operate – every asset, every process, every day.
Sustainability is embedded in the core of our business model, guiding our efforts to reduce waste and energy consumption, minimize landfill and preserve natural resources. At the heart of this is our commitment to extending the life of IT assets through refurbishment and reuse. By enabling redeployment at scale, we help organizations reduce their environmental impact while unlocking greater value from the technology they already own. Creating a world without waste to preserve our planet is not an annual event, but the foundation of how we approach every aspect of our work.
The Global E-Waste Challenge
E‑waste is one of the fastest‑growing waste streams in the world, and improper disposal carries serious environmental risks, from toxic materials entering ecosystems to the loss of valuable, finite resources. As these challenges escalate, organizations are adapting their ESG strategies and recognizing that responsible IT asset disposition (ITAD) is a critical lever for reducing environmental impact. Ensuring that every asset is reused or responsibly recycled is now a fundamental component of sustainable operations.
How SLS Drives Sustainability Every Day
SLS helps organizations shift from linear “take‑make‑dispose” models to circular ones that prioritize reuse, repair and resource recovery through:
- Artificial Intelligence – Our processes include augmented reality, predictive modeling for quality checks and fully automated robotic picking and sorting of components. This automation not only enables SLS to manage large asset volumes with greater speed and precision, it reduces environmental impact by maximizing component recovery and ensures we redeploy high-quality, reliable hardware ready for immediate integration into existing infrastructure.
- Extending Asset Lifecycles – One of the most impactful ways to reduce e‑waste is to keep technology in use longer. Our refurbishment and redeployment programs prioritize reuse, returning substantial value to clients while significantly reducing environmental impact. Every device given a second life represents fewer raw materials extracted, reduced emissions and fewer products entering the waste stream.
- Robotic Harvesting – While other companies are using robotics for recycling, we are the first to market utilizing this automation for reuse, resulting in far greater carbon avoidance for our clients. This technology allows us to redeploy millions of supply-constrained components annually.
- Responsible Recycling – When devices reach the end of their life, SLS ensures they are recycled through a controlled, environmentally responsible process. After hazardous components are removed, the remaining equipment is shredded and separated, producing clean streams of metals and plastics that can be used in next‑generation products.
- Our Reduced Environmental Impact – SLS delivers measurable sustainability benefits to our clients by reducing the carbon impact of our operations and the services we provide. Last year our Circular Centers reached carbon neutrality across direct operations, and we reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 71% from our FY20 baseline. All SLS Circular Centers now run on 100% renewable electricity, marking a major milestone in our decarbonization journey. These achievements directly help clients lower their Scope 3 emissions and advance their own sustainability goals.
Looking Forward
Our commitment to sustainability extends well beyond Earth Day. Our continued investment in new technologies, operational innovations and green infrastructure that strengthen our environmental performance and support our clients’ evolving needs. As the IT landscape grows more complex, SLS remains a trusted and innovative partner in responsible lifecycle management.
Thank you to the teams across SLS who make sustainable outcomes possible every day. Together with our clients and partners, we’re building a cleaner, more circular future – one asset at a time.
