Redefining IT Asset Redeployment in the Age of AI
How Sims Lifecycle Services Powers a Smarter, Sustainable Supply Chain
Artificial intelligence is transforming how we use and store data in unprecedented ways. At the heart of AI, data centers are racing to keep pace, evolving rapidly to handle heavier, more complex workloads that push traditional infrastructure to its limits.

As new and more advanced network hardware is installed to support AI workloads, older equipment is decommissioned. Sims Lifecycle Services (SLS) is reimagining how this decommissioned hardware is processed and repurposed, helping data centers unlock new potential through smart recovery and redeployment strategies.
Our innovative approach allows organizations to extend the lifecycle of memory components and support rapid scaling of AI and data-intensive workloads – all by redeploying components already in your supply chain.
Automation at Scale: Micro-Factories for Redeployment
To handle these high-volume ITAD requirements, SLS deploys purpose-built automated micro-factories to identify, extract, sort and label high-value components for immediate redeployment. The micro-factories have the capacity to process thousands of DIMMS per day and are easily scaled to handle large volumes of servers. These automated facilities:
- Extract and inventory high-value components.
- Label and prepare parts for redeployment or resale.
Servers contain several highly sensitive components that require precise handling to preserve integrity and avoid damage during recovery. Our robotic harvesting stations eliminate human handling, vastly increasing quality and processing speed.
CXL-Driven Memory Pooling: Innovation Already in Your Supply Chain
Traditionally, each server requires its own dedicated memory. A significant innovation emerging in AI infrastructure is CXL-enabled memory pooling. This technology allows data centers to share memory resources across multiple servers that a range of devices can access as needed.

This means that instead of each server using only its own installed memory (which often leads to underutilization), multiple servers can access a common pool of memory dynamically, based on real-time workload demands.
Redeployed DIMMs play a critical role in unlocking the full potential of CXL memory pooling. Recovered from retired servers, these DIMMs are validated and repurposed for use in CXL memory pools. The result is a scalable, efficient memory architecture built from a data center’s own inventory.
SLS enables this approach by:
- Redeploying high-quality used memory (DIMMs) already in a clients’ supply chain.
- Delivering a domestic, tariff-free supply of components already in-country, eliminating supply chain delays and avoiding carbon emissions.
- Lower early-life failure rates than many new, untested DIMMs, thanks to proven stability from extended real-world operation.
This model not only supports operational continuity, it enables it. By drawing from internal retired hardware, SLS creates resilient, low-emission memory pools that help data centers scale responsibly.
Proven Value
By extracting and repurposing these components, SLS enables our clients to:
- Maximize ROI from capital investments
- Reduce procurement costs
- Avoid tariffs and import restrictions
- Accelerate deployment timelines by supplying parts that are immediately available
Sustainability at the Core of AI ITAD
In addition to the financial and logistical benefits of component redeployment, the sustainability gains are significant. Redeployment of whole units and components offers distinct environmental benefits by reducing waste generation and resource depletion, while avoiding pollution and emissions that are associated with the production of new devices.
SLS integrates circular economy principles into every aspect of IT asset disposition:
- Carbon Impact: Extending product lifespan avoids carbon emissions and allows clients to draw on their own supply of components
- E-Waste Mitigation: Less demand for new hardware minimizes waste as fewer devices are retired
- Environmental Reporting: Our award-winning Sustainability Calculator provides our clients with comprehensive environmental reporting for both their reused and recycled electronic materials and quantifies their scope 4 emissions.
ITAD for the AI Era
SLS is not only equipped to handle the challenges of AI data centers, we are continually evolving to stay ahead of them. Turn your retired infrastructure into a next-generation resource with SLS and shape the future of sustainable IT asset management.
