In 2008, at the onslaught of the economic downturn, Howard County, Maryland set out to become an organized support system for its citizens. The Board to Promote Self-Sufficiency (BPSS) was created to stimulate the economic stability of individuals and families to help reduce poverty in Howard County. Local businesses and organizations are critical players in the board’s pursuit to ensure all residents can achieve financial stability. Cooperation and innovative efforts businesses contribute are essential to the board’s success.

This year the BPSS selected Sims Recycling Solutions to receive the Hire Power Award for their support and effort to promote practices that develop the workforce in the Baltimore area. An award presentation was held April 28 at Allen & Shariff in Columbia, Maryland.
“Sims is enthusiastic in our efforts to work with employees and the board to deploy initiatives that empower advancement,” said Julie Keough, customer service manager for Sims Recycling Solutions. “We are always open to training and development programs that will better equip our staff.”
Activities that set Sims apart include an array of training programs such as the year-long apprenticeship, certification classes and educational seminars. Internal methods such as certificates, awards and company functions serve as a ways for employees to improve and progress within Sims.

The BPSS has dedicated time and resources to the advancement of its residents through its continued partnership with local businesses and enterprises such as the plan to end homelessness, ending hunger and earning power.
Sims is looking forward to evolving programs and working with the board to further better the people of Howard County.
